Spring has arrived, along with the beauty of the flowers and the trees blooming! Days are longer and the temperatures raised as well, which makes it a perfect excuse to do a Spring break getaway!

If you want to discover more of Spain and enjoy the Spring weather below are my suggestions. Start packing your bag!

Road Trip Extremadura

Spain has 17 autonomous regions, being Extremadura one of them!

Back in 2019, I did a road trip in Extremadura with my sister for five days and we had lots of fun! We visited cities, villages, Unesco sites and ate lots of tapas! Below are the places we visited. 3,2,1 are you ready? Let’s go!

Garganta de los infiernos

Our first stop was la Reserva Natural de la Garganta de los Infiernos located in Valle del Jerte. We parked the car at the main entrance of the park and we decided to do the “ruta circular garganta de los infiernos” (3km) to reach the pilones, the natural pools (see picture below). When we finally arrived we went for a swim (be careful not to slip).

Cáceres

Did you know that Cáceres is one of Spain’s World Heritage Cities? If you like history you can’t miss this city! Here you will be transported to the Renaissance time and to medieval times!

Curiosity: Game of Thrones was filmed here.

Trujillo, the birthplace of discoveries

Trujillo was a pleasant stop on our trip! I personally enjoyed the magnificent view from the castle!

Francisco Pizarro, the conqueror of Peru and Francisco de Orellana, who participated in the discovery of Amazonas were born in Trujillo.

Guadalupe and its monastery

The Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 1993. It was the King Alfonso XI of Castile, that commissioned the construction of the monastery as a sign of gratitude to the Virgin, after his victory.

Merida and the Roman empire

Mérida is a destination that brings the old Roman Empire back to life!

The city has a Roman theatre which is over 2000 years and is still in use (see picture below).

South of Spain – Andalusia

Andalusia was under Moorish rule from the 8th-15th centuries, a legacy that shows in its architecture in several cities (Cordoba mosque-cathedral) and Granada palace.

Seville

Since the time I lived in Lisbon (2016-2018) that I wanted to visit Seville but that didn’t happen until 2021! I did a road trip that started in Costa Vicentina and that continued in the South of Spain, being the first stop Seville. Is considered one of the most beautiful in Andalucia.

Cordoba

Cordoba was not in our initial plan since I wanted to arrive home and have one day to rest (Sunday) before starting working but everyone convinced me to travel an extra day and just arrived home Sunday night, which was what we did.

What surprised me the most in Cordoba was its beautiful mosque-cathedral and the amazing courtyards (patios).

Pueblos blancos

We decided to visit 4 in one day: Ronda, Grazalema, zahara de la sierra and Setenil de Las Bodegas.

Ronda

Grazalema

Zahara de la sierra
