One of the best things about travelling is to have the chance to try different foods!

A country’s food will tell you about its people and culture!

During my three days in Budapest, I decided to try some typical dishes. Let me do a small introduction to Hungarian cuisine.

First of all, let’s talk about the paprika that is very popular in Hungary! The country has a big variety of paprika and this ingredient is an essential component of some of the best-known Hungarian dishes such as lecsó (Hungarian ratatouille), chicken paprikash, gulyás (soup or stew of meat and vegetables) and halászlé (Hungarian fisherman’s soup). The Hungarian paprika gives meals a good taste and a nice red colour! If you want to buy paprika visit the Great Market Hall in Pest.

Last but not least gulyás also known as goulash, is Hungary’s national dish! It is a spicy meat stew with paprika.

Let us now dive into Hungarian cuisine! Below are the dishes I tried in Budapest and my honest opinion about them.

Chicken paprikash with Hungarian nokedli (dumplings)

After my tour of the Hungarian parliament, I decided to have lunch and I tried chicken paprikash. I recommend that you choose a nice place to try it. The dish was good and tasty but the dumplings were a bit strange (personally didn’t like the Hungarian dumplings but I liked the rest).

Goulash

I ate goulash near the Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd) on the Buda side. This was not my first time eating Goulash so I already knew how the dish would taste. I actually tried it for the first time in my hometown at a soup festival and I liked it. It is a very tasty soup made of meat and vegetables seasoned with paprika and other spices.

Lecsó (ratatouille)

Lecsó is a Hungarian stew which traditionally has peppers, tomato, onion and paprika. I really liked Lecsó.

Where to eat? I eat Lecsó in Hunyadi Lakásbisztró és Kézműves Söröző.

Lángos (Hungarian fried bread)

Lángos – the Hungarian street food you must try! Lángos is a fried bread dough covered with a topping. It is fried in oil and served with toppings. The most popular one is cheese and sour cream. I tried lángos with sausage and I liked the taste.

Somloi Galuska

Awarded by many with the title of Hungary’s favourite dessert, Somloi Galuska is a sweet dessert of multiple layers of different types of sponge cake, cream and chocolate sauce. It’s not necessary to say that I liked this dessert or is it?

Kakaós Ciga are chocolate rolls often served for breakfast in Hungary. Nice to eat when you’re hungry and need a break from your sightseeing.

Where to eat? You can find this sweet in typical bakeries and pastries.
